Bedding Area Development

Bedding Area Development

Deer don’t choose bedding areas simply because the cover is thick. They look for security, favorable wind conditions, thermal protection, escape routes and convenient access to food and water.

Future Whitetail Development evaluates how deer currently use your property and identifies opportunities to improve existing bedding cover or establish new bedding pockets in strategic locations.

Our bedding-area planning may include:

  1. Identifying existing doe and buck bedding
  2. Selecting locations based on terrain, wind and thermal conditions
  3. Developing secure, low-pressure bedding pockets
  4. Improving horizontal cover at deer level
  5. Creating multiple entrance and escape routes
  6. Releasing desirable shrubs, browse and young growth
  7. Using selective cutting where appropriate
  8. Connecting bedding areas to food, water and travel corridors
  9. Protecting bedding cover from unnecessary human pressure

We don’t recommend cutting trees simply to make an area thicker. Every bedding improvement must fit into the property’s larger habitat and hunting strategy.

Just as importantly, we consider how the bedding area will affect your stand placement and access. Creating excellent bedding cover won’t improve your hunting if deer can see, hear or smell you every time you approach a stand.

The goal is to create secure cover that encourages deer to spend more daylight hours on your property—not merely pass through it after dark.
